The Critical Role of Surveying in Geotechnical Engineering

In August, Sam Hargrave, PLS and Maggie Thornton, CPSM visited GRI, a full-service geotechnical, geologic, and pavement engineering solutions company located in Tigard, where Sam presented a Lunch & Learn program to their team. Westlake often works alongside GRI on projects like the Oregon Zoo Bond Improvements, the Rose Quarter Improvement Project, and the Willamette Water Supply Partnership (WWSP).

GRI had invited Westlake to present a Lunch & Learn focused on the critical role of survey datums in ensuring accurate and consistent project data for geotechnical firms. Sam presented to 30+ staff attending in person, and a few others who attended virtually. His presentation centered around answering common questions about different survey datums and coordinate systems. The audience had great questions such as how datums can affect the positioning and elevation of boreholes, and how geotechnical engineering professionals can coordinate their work with surveyors for better project outcomes.

Thank you, Sam, for representing Westlake and helping others in the AEC industry strengthen their understanding of the tools and systems that support our work!

Client Testimonial

I wanted to compliment you on your cad files. These files were the cleanest I have worked with in a long time. I see a lot of files from Engineers (200+ jobs a year)  and your files were very nice to work with. I appreciate an engineering firm that takes the time to pay attention to their product.”
