Laser Scanning for an Archaeological Excavation

In July 2016, Westlake Consultants provided 3D laser scanning and consulting services to the University of Louisiana for their giant camel excavation project. The camel, Megatylopus, lived 7 million years ago, stood 12-14 feet tall, and functioned much like a giraffe.

This is the second specimen found at this South-Central Oregon site. It took two months to completely excavate and prepare the specimen for transportation to the University’s Geology Museum. The excavation was led by Dr. James Martin, professor in the School of Geosciences at the University of Louisiana.

Westlake is proud to have provided 3D laser scanning for such a fascinating excavation project. We truly enjoy opportunities to support education.

You can read more about Dr. Martin’s Megatylopus project here.
