Begin with the end in mind.
SINCE 1983.
This year marks a significant milestone for Westlake Consultants as we celebrate Bernard Smith’s 25-year journey with our company.
Bernard joined Westlake in 1999 and was named Associate in 2006. In his first two years, he served as the Survey Development Manager. As a dual-licensed professional in Engineering and Survey, he has a deep understanding and respect for both professions.
Bernard’s professional journey began over 40 years ago with an overseas stint in Saudi Arabia, where he worked on the Dharan Airbase project and the Jubail Industrial City. He then spent over four years with the Maine Central Railroad and worked as an airport consultant in New England. He also founded his own business, B.R. Smith Associates. As an avid skier, one of his favorite projects was providing layout services for local ski-area chairlifts in Northern Maine.
At Westlake, Bernard had the opportunity to work on a wide range of efforts, from local to national projects. His portfolio includes over 25 wind farm projects, several hospital and medical campus developments, and residential and commercial projects in the Portland Metro area. At one point, Westlake’s project reach required Bernard to hold Professional Engineering licenses in 17 different states.
His role extends beyond engineering tasks; he provides mentorship, team leadership, coordination, and effective communication, ensuring the success of our young engineers and surveyors. Many of his mentees have gone on to hold public and private industry leadership roles.
Recently, Bernard had the privilege of visiting the Panama Canal, where he learned about one of the largest civil engineering projects in the world. This experience fills him with pride as he reflects on his career in the engineering profession.
Join us in congratulating Bernard Smith on 25 years of outstanding service at Westlake Consultants and wishing him continued success in all his future endeavors. Here’s to many more years of collaboration, innovation, and achievement!
Westlake did a fantastic job of getting good documents together on a complicated project.”
