The Assistant Controller plays a key role in managing the daily accounting operations of our growing civil engineering and surveying firm. This position supports the Chief Financial Officer and leadership team by ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining project accounting integrity, and improving financial processes. This position offers an opportunity to grow into a Controller-level role.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in managing day-to-day accounting operations including AP, payroll, Prevailing Wage, billing, and bank reconciliations.
- Support month end and year end close processes to ensure timely, accurate reporting.
- Assist in maintaining the general ledger and ensure accurate, organized financial records.
- Assist Chief Financial Officer to oversee and support the billing staff. Work with Project Managers to ensure the billing process is followed, including project setup, contracting, and client communication.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls suitable for a small business environment.
- Ensure compliance with state/local regulations, including payroll tax, business licensing, and consultant contracts.
- Manage out-of-state work requirements; oversee professional and technical registration compliance.
- Train as backup to all positions in Administration Department when needed.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required.
- 3-6 years of accounting experience; experience in architecture, engineering, or construction, or other project-based services strongly preferred.
- CPA or CMA certification preferred but not required.
- Proficiency with Excel and accounting systems.
- Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint a plus. Ability to quickly learn specific software programs.
- Experience with payroll and certified payroll/prevailing wage reporting.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-moving, small-team environment.
- Proven experience in financial management, operations optimization, and process improvement
- Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and guide cross-functional teams.
- Skilled at problem solving and decision-making skills; proactive and resourceful.
This is a full-time, in-office position located at our headquarters in Tigard, Oregon. Occasional extended hours during monthly close, audits, or to meet major deadlines may be required.

- Booking travel arrangements for out of town work for various departments
- Coordination of field work for a variety of projects, including high profile and confidential projects;
- Maintaining safety standards and site safety protocol;
- Leadership and training of Instrument Operator team members within the IMD department;
- Communicating with Client and Contractor field management;
- Coordination of field data files (electronic and hard copy).
The ideal candidate for this position will have:
- A minimum of 7 years of experience as an Instrument Technician, field procedures for data collection, and crew support.
- Intermediate skills in construction layout, calculations, and as-built surveying.
- Intermediate skills using survey equipment and software including survey instruments, data collectors, electronic levels, and 3D scanners.
- Demonstrated history of careful implementation of QA procedures.
- Detailed and legible note-keeping techniques.
- A genuine aptitude for geometry, problem-solving, and prior experience in precise surveying / measurement would be of great value.
- Some experience with AutoCAD would be valuable.
- Ability to be badged for work in sensitive/restricted areas (i.e., drug testing, background screening).
- A valid driver’s license (a valid state-issued license is required at time of hire).

We’re looking for a mid-level Survey Instrument Technician to join our specialty “not your typical surveying” Industrial Measurement Division (IMD).
