3D Laser Scanning / Reality Capture

We pioneered 3D scanning and measurement in the Northwest 30+ years ago. Our expertise is forged from tens of thousands of hours of experience with 3D technologies.

Our scan team embraces challenges and innovations, and when scanning is the best solution, we work with our clients as a strategic partner to offer support, training, and collaboration.

Westlake provides scanning throughout Oregon and the United States (and internationally for select clients), serving a wide array of industries. We welcome the opportunity to learn more about your industry and project challenges.

Benefits

  1. Dense & Detailed Data Scanning provides information about the shape and irregularities of every visible surface which is scanned.
  2. Reliable Data  Scan data is geometrically reliable and provides a full visual inventory.
  3. Rapid  Scanning is accomplished quickly, and provides a very high level of detail.
  4. Safe  It is especially useful when safety and site accessibility are of concern.

Data and Deliverables

Because scan data can be geo-referenced, conventional or GPS surveying control can be used to tie the scan data to a known coordinate system. Data can also be tied to a site or local coordinate system. For example, data from different floors of a building can be tied to a building exterior, or different perspectives of a freeway interchange can be tied to the state plane system. We can provide drawings, dimensions, analysis, and renderings to depict true site conditions.

Data Management

We pioneered 3D measurement services in the Pacific Northwest, and we remain one of the few that offer data management services in addition to scanning. Our experience with data management is robust, and we take a collaborative approach to problem-solving. 3D laser scanning is often used in conjunction with our precision industrial measurement services. Our data specialists are trained to use cutting edge programs and equipment, and we maintain our inventory to include the most recent, as well as older, software versions to ensure client needs are met.

Common applications for 3D laser scanning include:

Marine Projects

  • From small fishing vessels to NOAA research ships, scanning captures data for complex hull shapes or entire vessels, enhancing options for design and prefabrication. The result has proven valuable to clients for cost and time savings.

Architecture/Historical Preservation Projects

  • For remodeling, expansion, and historic preservation projects, scanning provides data about existing conditions to support analysis, design, and even prefabrication. The data is immediately visual and geometrically-reliable for conceptual planning, space planning, design options, circulation planning, layout, and BIM model development.

Civil and Structural Engineering

  • Scanning offers several advantages for project evaluation and design. Scan data can be used to generate both 2D and 3D CAD drawings, and because it is so visual, it supports public involvement program exhibits, and can be revisited to validate design and construction assumptions throughout the life of the project. And, remote data collection minimizes safety issues and traffic impacts.

Construction

  • The speed of data capture means that construction progress is not impacted. Scanning is often performed to capture pre-pour conditions and placement of conduit and rebar, collect as-built documentation, and allow for detailed and very accurate quantity calculations for excavation, shotcreting, grading or rock stockpiles.

MEP Solutions

  • Complex mechanical and piping systems are an ideal candidate for 3D laser scanning because conventional measurements are difficult to make and depict within those environments. 3D scanning has revolutionized the collection, rendering, and application of data for construction drawing and as-built challenges.
