MEP: 3D Scans for Complex Systems

Complex mechanical systems are ideal candidates for 3D laser scanning because conventional measurements are difficult to make and depict. By modeling the scan data, file size is decreased and the data is easier to interpret, especially when color is used to segregate pipe runs. Alternatively, dimensions can be taken in the raw data for pipe dimensions, connection points, and flange detail. 3D scan data is used by MEP engineers for clash detection, site evaluation, and design.

For the  US Army Corps of Engineers Dredge Yaquina, Westlake performed scanning of various engine rooms and piping runs to create a 3D model of the vessel’s propulsion and dredging systems.
