Mike Hargrave, PLS Celebrates 35 Years

Westlake Consultants is pleased to celebrate Mike Hargrave’s 35th Anniversary with the company. Mike’s enduring commitment to Westlake is evident not only in his work but also in the joy he brings to our workplace. Here, he shares his insights in response to a few questions about the evolution of our company.

In 2023, Westlake is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and it’s your 35th year with the company. What do you think has changed the most within the firm over the years? What has remained the same?

Things that have changed: Technological advances like switching from Pacsoft to AutoCAD and subsequent versions; total stations (manual, to semi-robotic, to fully robotic); GPS advancements; growth of our Industrial Measurement Division.

Things that have stayed the same: Westlake has maintained a diverse client base and is fortunate to work with many longtime clients. We’ve continued to foster successful business year after year and are proud to retain so many long-term employees.

Based on your experience over the years, what trends are you seeing in the AEC industry that pique your interest? How should Westlake adapt alongside these trends?

A trend in recent years is that jurisdictions are pushing for teaming with COBID firms when responding to RFPs and SOQs. We are working diligently to meet that expectation. We are also researching drone technology and how best to include it in our workflow to enhance the services Westlake provides.

What has been your favorite part about your career in the AEC industry, and how has your role day-to-day within the firm evolved over the years as you transitioned into your role as a Principal and Vice President?

I started here as a Survey Technician, then moved up to Survey Manager, Heavy Construction Department Manager, then Principal and Vice President. I’ve enjoyed the transition and working in the heavy construction industry, developing long term relationships with our field crew and office personnel, general contractor estimators, superintendents, and project managers.

What are some favorite projects that come to mind looking back on your career thus far? What made them standouts?

Nike Headquarters Phase 1 and 2 was the first project I worked on first as a Technician, then later as a Project Manager. Portland International Airport (PDX) Taxiway and Runway Projects helped me develop lasting relationships with department managers and contractors. The TriMet Westside Light Rail project and our work assisting in the development of the Rose Quarter led to great exposure for Westlake. The 62-mile South Mist transmission route project started our long-term ongoing relationship with NW Natural.

In honor of the 40th, what fond memories come to mind of the company and its people over the years?

Working with many talented field personnel including Paul Craig, Mike Matychuck, Dave Brown, Mike Weinberg, Spike Martinez, Glenn Morley, Bernard Pawlik, and Chris Kaleikilo. Also, working with talented office personnel such as Ken Griffin, Steve Buckles, Lou Meeh, and Doug Liles. I also always look forward to our holiday parties. I am grateful to have been mentored, and then worked alongside WCI founders Len Schelsky and Judi Haney.
